STERANKO: ARTE NOIR

A handsome, new volume celebrating the life and work of STERANKO, whom one of its contributors calls a "paragon of modern heroic mythology." The massive book incorporates eleven detailed chapters of behind-the-scenes stories, historic documentation, personal anecdotes, and analytical insights about the controversial artist-writer-performer, and features additional essays scribed especially for the book by a host of internationally-renowned authors, pop-culture critics, and writers, including Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist of THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY.

STERANKO: ARTE NOIR is the largest and most comprehensive collection of the creator's work ever published, packed with new, rare, and classic art, including hundreds of color and B&W images spanning the full range of his career--from comics to book covers, trading cards to limited-edition prints, film production illustrations to movie posters--many never before compiled in book form.

In July, 2001, Steranko was Guest of Honor at Spain's gala Semana Negra festival of the arts, a multi-cultural event, which ran for ten days and showcased the largest exhibition of his work ever shown in Europe, with well over 1,000,000 people in attendance. Originally founded to celebrate Mystery Literature, the festival's title roughly translates to Festival of Darkness. Extending from July 5-14, the ten-day celebration focused on a wide variety of cultural arts and activities. Italian, French, German, Spanish, American, and Latin-American publications, radio, and TV stations covered and participated in the event. In recent years, the Discovery Channel produced a program on Semana Negra and The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post have all reported on the festival.

In addition to functioning as a career retrospective, STERANKO: ARTE NOIR, sponsored by the Gijon Museum of Modern Art, also served as the show's exhibition catalog and was produced with bi-lingual text throughout. The book includes a myriad of insights into the subject's kaleidoscopic careers and is heavily illustrated with hundreds of images, including visualizations of Indiana Jones, Batman, Conan, Luke Skywalker, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom, and many others.

As a musician, art director, magician, photographer, fire-eater, designer, escape artist, filmmaker, pop-culture lecturer, and publisher, Steranko has cut a ferocious path through the entertainment arts. The innovations he created as artist-writer on Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America, and X-Men titles revolutionized the comics form and, as an illustrator, he painted a multitude of movie posters, record albums, and book covers, including 30 Shadow paperbacks.

He has shown his work at more than 200 exhibitions worldwide, including the Louvre, and his original art has sold at major auction houses in the $10-20,000 range. His two volumes of THE HISTORY OF COMICS have sold more than 100,000 copies each and as the editor-publisher of the international newsstand entertainment magazine PREVUE, he conducted hundreds of superstar interviews and penned more than three million words. As a filmmaker, he has collaborated with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola on some of their most popular movies.

Recently, WIZARD honored Steranko as the 5th Most Influential Comics Creator since the form evolved in the 1930s and in the CBG Millennium Poll, he was voted as the 5th Most Important Cover Artist of All Time. He was given the 2003 Julie Award for his Lifetime Contribution to the Fantastic Arts and, as an expert in the pop-culture field, he recently served as Creative Consultant for the History Channel's two-hour documentary COMIC-BOOK SUPERHEROES--UNMASKED.

A hefty 8 x 10" volume, ARTE NOIR features 200 pages of Steranko visual magic in a high-quality, perfect-bound deluxe format, printed on 80-pound coated matte stock with a heavy, full-color, laminated card stock cover with flaps, and housed in a hard-surfaced leatherette, crimson-foil embossed slipcase. Copies have minor rubbing on covers due to shifting while being shipped from Europe; slipcases are mint. Each copy has been personally autographed by Steranko.

STERANKO: ARTE NOIR is limited to 3000 copies worldwide, with no other editions planned. $75.00
